Nasturtium 001

A surface design heavily inspired by the unruly patch of wiggly nasturtium plants outside my front door. I feel a super strong affection for them, their propensity for following the sun, and the secretive, tangled world hidden beneath the broad lids of their leaves. This design is, I suppose, my imagined version of what might be going on under there. Such private, cheeky plants!

Design Process

This design begins with a loose painted colour experiment featuring a nasturtium plant in all of its wiggly glory (below). Inspired by Josef Frank’s wonderful half drop patterns and their super creative use of flowing vines, I sketch the pattern tile at a small scale. Next, I measure out the tile precisely, ensuring the various elements will align once tiled, and block out some rough colours. I scan the tile, chop it up and shuffle the pieces to clean up the edges. The colours are adjusted in Photoshop and remaining details added and tweaked in Procreate.

Design Process

For the second design, I leaned in to the rainbow colour palette and allowed the wiggly stems of the nasturtium shine on their own. Pops of contrasting colour punctuate the design, featuring neat little buds. This particular design was created entirely digitally, using Procreate and Photoshop, to match the colour palette of Nasturtium 001.
